 CAROLYN Y. JOHNSON
Born in Texas, and bred in New Mexico. She was brought to a deeper understanding of herself, her people's history, and the nature of her ancestor's gifts and failings in New York. Ms. Johnson currently resides in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.
Her tribute to the perseverance of a cultural tradition "Junteenth Community", took eight years to complete. The testimonials of the current participants in this event, and their poignant recollections of those past, inspired the need to record the dynamics and significance of a century old continuous expression of culture.
Ms. Johnson's documentary has won critical acclaim, and received an award in the category of community video from the Black Filmmakers Hall Of Fame in Oakland, CA on October 7th, 2000.
She released the following statement in response to the award... "The category of community video is especially dear to this filmmaker because my links to the community fuel my creative energy".
As founder of Dis/Illusion Film & Video, Ms Johnson states "the company came into existence to reflect both the consciousness and the unconsciousness of African Americans from all segments of the U.S. population".
Ms. Johnson's film is visually complete, however, work on a revised and original soundtrack is still in progress and will be made available on CD in the near future.
